A (hopefully) frequently updated blog featuring my art work. Not to be confused with the art blogs of any other Brad Thingvold.

Luigi as Green Arrow
I had the pleasure of setting up a table last weekend here in my hometown of Fargo, ND. One of the commissions requested of me was of Luigi cosplaying as Green Arrow. Fun idea. Instead of trying to fit a character of such a traditional "cartoony" appearance into my own style I took this as an opportunity to try something different. The folks who commissioned the piece seemed genuinely pleased so that's the important thing but I am quite happy myself. In hindsight there are some things that I would have done differently but, that's common.

Darkseid
As I get more comfortable working digitally I'm finding it fun and challenging to broaden my horizons and try some new things. Due in part to my general unease with inking I typically create my pencils very tight. I'd rather have a clear understanding of my intent when inking rather than having to interpret the meaning. Weird to say since all of the steps are my own but, whatever...

Jean Grey inks
Digitally inked version of the Jean Grey/Phoenix piece I did a few days ago. Working on my inking. Fun to try some new things. Not too skilled yet but I feel comfortable working like this.

Jean Grey Phoenix
The "good" version of Jean Grey's Phoenix. That explains why she doesn't look pissed off. There probably wouldn't be much more a difference than that. I think I'm going to put some digital inks on this too.

Hands!
Working on a few different things at the moment and haven't had a lot of time to work on nice finished artwork (stuff that I can post at least). Still trying to work on figure work when I have time, though. So, here are some hand drawings. All from photo reference.

Heads
Lady's heads to be more precise. More practice. Heads and faces have always been a challenge. Hopefully some exercises like this will go a long way.

Pose and anatomy studies
There have been a few projects I've worked on recently that I'm not allowed to share yet (independent things) so my online presence can really fall off at times. I know I need to work on my figure drawing/creation skills and also know that it would make for some decent filler for this blog between actual completed pieces I can post. I'm going to try my damnedest to not only work on pages of sketches but also post them in a timely manner (well, timely for me).

Fett commission
This is another commission I picked up while at iMagicon in Minot, ND. It's a father and son dressed as Jango and Boba Fett, respectively. They asked for Slave I flying in the background but they way I composed it left quite a bit of negative space on the upper corners. I decided to fill those areas in with Jabba's Palace/Tatooine and a general Coruscant skyline.

Convention sketches
I've had the pleasure of attending a couple of local shows/cons in my home state of North Dakota recently. I'll post a few of my commissions here but I unfortunately forgot to take photos of all of them. Oh well, I'll just remember to have more beers next time. That will help, right?!

Captain Marvel digital inks
I recently purchased a Yiynova MVP20U+FE tablet monitor. I've worked mostly "traditionally" to this point but have recently been feeling an increased desire to branch out and start doing more digitally. I considered purchasing a Cintiq but, given the price, felt that a less expensive alternative would be a better starting point. If this digitally thing doesn't take it's probably easier to be out a few hundred bucks than $1000+. The Yiynova products were getting some very good reviews so I thought I'd give it shot.

DC Workshop page 2
This is the second page of the submission I prepared for this year's DC Talent Workshop. Like mentioned in my previous post, I used one of the scripts that DC provided on their website.

ECCC, DC Talent Workshop, and other stuff
In December I was able to pick up some work drawing double page spreads for an upcoming graphic novel. It was a lot of fun and was paid work as well so that was nice. Unfortunately, I'm not able to post the images online for some time. I'm hoping that the online restriction is lifted soon because I would like to share them (and drum up some interest in the project, of course).
